left-side inside chain turn to dip into starter
·2 mins
→ West Coast Swing → Dips
This is an 6 beat pattern elongated into an 8 beat pattern because the anchor step is 4 beats to allow the follower to go into closed position. The actual dip happens on beat 5.
- Start in an open left position.
- Lead a left-side inside chain turn up to step 4.
- Face 9 o’clock on steps 4 thru 8.
- Always stay on the left side of the slot; do not step across on step 4.
- On 3.5, while the follower rotates, put right arm across back and under the follower’s left armpit.
- On 5 and 6, don’t do any footwork.
- Stand split weight or with a little bit more weight on you right leg because the follower is going to dip to the left.
- Be extremely careful not to use your arms to encourage or push the follower into the dip.
- Preemptively provide resistance to your right, the opposite direction in which the follower is dipping.
- Do not add any force towards the direction in which the follower is dipping when holding the follower by the waist and the right shoulder.
- Be in front of the follower slot-wise. The dip will not work if you are behind.
- On 5, dip the follower so she faces 12:00 and up the ceiling.
- It is up to the follower to dip as much or as little as she wants.
- On 6, begin bringing the follower up.
- On 7 and 8, shift your weight onto your right foot while the follower does a 0.5 turn clockwise as you “unwind” her from your right arm.
- After the dip, the follower looks at 6:00; you are perpendicular, looking at 9:00.
- End in a starter position.
From here you can step across as if doing a continuous whip and repeating steps 4 and 5. Then stop doing continuous whip and signal this by relaxing your arms and allowing the follower to settle. Then do a inside chain turn from starter position.
